Note: These instructions start AFTER priming, if necessary; check the can for specific surface prep info, or ask at BoatCraft (priming isn't necessary for the varnish). Prep your surface following the directions found on your can which are specific to your base material. The purpose of prep is to remove any wax, oil or dirt so that the varnish/paint can adhere properly. Next, scuff sand with 220 grit sandpaper and wipe down with a tack cloth to remove all dust. Important: never work out of the can; always pour as much varnish or paint as you think you will need into another container (a small roller tray works best). Take a small square of folded paper and clean the rim of the can; place the lid on top, place a piece of wood over that and tap wood to ensure that the lid is on tight; not tapping the lid directly helps prevent damage to the seal. Set the can upside down on a piece of plastic (a small amount of varnish/paint could leak out and glue the lid to your work surface). Never leave the lid off the can for longer than necessary. Roll the varnish or paint on with a 3" wide high density 1/8" thick foam roller in about two foot square sections; immediately 'tip off' each section with a high density 3" foam brush. The brush should be dipped into the varnish or paint only about a 1/2" and the excess removed on the edge of the roller tray. 'Tip off' by sliding the foam brush over the freshly rolled section; lifting the foam brush at the end of the stroke like an airplane taking off. Work from right to left or left to right depending on your preference. Overlap slightly with the roller and tip off with the foam brush; always tip back into the section previously completed to prevent lap marks. If you feel the brush chatter dip the brush in the varnish/paint and go over that spot again. Many thin coats are better than several thick coats; you should aim for three or four coats minimum. If the last coat is too thin you may have misses that will not be as glossy as other areas. Scuff sand between coats with 220 grit sand paper; you may switch to 240 grit paper before the last coat. NOTE: You must work in small sections in order to get a smooth finish. A 2x2' section is an ideal size, since paint cures quite quickly. Finally, if you have left over varnish/paint, you should pour it into an appropriately sized glass jar. These products are moisture cure and since there is always moisture in the air, the less air in the container with the product, the longer it will last.
